KOR=GIRL is a lo-fi ambient, pop-rock, and electronic duo from Tokyo, Japan. Comprised of vocalists and percussionists MIKOTO and FUJI, the band was formed in 2010 as a new act signed to the D-Topia label. Their musical style is formed from twin vocals and the use of Korg's Wavedrum percussion synth, where their name comes from. They debuted with the single "KIYOMIZU", which samples the famous Cornelius song, "Star Fruits Surf Rider". KOR=GIRL's first mini-album, "KOR=GIRL I", was put up for free on their website two weeks before the official release date of July 21, 2010. As their producer wrote, "Music will be for free someday...musicians never die". A self-described music nerd, MIKOTO was born in 1991 and moved to Tokyo from her native Fukuoka at the age of 17. She lists her influences as including post-rock, 80s rock and dance music, as well as many other kinds. Her voice and musicianship greatly impressed producer Terukado Oonishi (responsible for such acts as Aira Mitsuki and Saori@destiny) who signed her up for the label without an audition. She writes all of KOR=GIRL's lyrics, which are completely in English. FUJI, born in 1990, has always been a competent musician - since an early age, she has been able to play the piano well. Before the formation of KOR=GIRL she composed and recorded plenty of original songs at home, and would perform them live.
