about

Julie Gold (born February 3, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer-songwriter based in New York. She is best known as the writer of the song "From a Distance" which won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991 for Bette Midler's version. Nanci Griffith, the first to record "From a Distance" (in 1987), has also recorded Gold’s songs "Heaven", "Southbound Train", "Good Night New York", and "Mountain of Sorrow". Many other artists have also covered Julie Gold songs. From 1990 to 1994, Gold was a member of Four Bitchin' Babes, a group (with rotating membership) of American female singer-songwriters who performed mainly humorous, satirical or light-hearted songs in the folk genre.
