Julia Grima

Julia was born on the 8th of October and lives in Mellieha, Malta. Her singing career started as early as from her kindergarten years where she sang her first solo and continued to do so in school musicals. At around 8 years old she auditioned for the ‘Malta Children’s Choir’ (Act React) and during her 4 years as a member she had the opportunity to be part of various productions held by Act React, such as ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and Abba Gold in Concert’. At the age of 12, she then joined the ‘St. Monica Choir’, directed by Sr. Beniamina Portelli in which she spent another 4 years. With this choir she also took part in a concert held in Scotland. Julia’s interests were not just of singing, she undertook piano and music theory lessons up to Grade 5 and Grade 6 respectively, assessed by the Royal Schools of Music. As a soloist she started taking part in many singing competitions and achieved very positive results, one of which led her to songwriter Mark Spiteri Lucas. Her first collaboration with him and also lyricist Paul Ellul was in 2006 with the song ‘Gahan Tibkix’ which placed third in one of the national Maltese song competitions ‘L-Ghanja tal-Poplu’, being only 16 years old. This song was later translated to Italian by Francesco Bonagura for Julia to take part in the ‘Festival di Maiori’, situated in Naples, Italy and won the Prize for Originality. Her next success was achieved with the song ‘Ice Queen’, also penned by Mark Spiteri Lucas together
