Joseph Augustin Gürrlich (born 1761 Münsterberg (Silesia), died June 27, 1817 Berlin) was a German musician and composer. An extraordinarily versatile musician, he is connected to the musical life of the city of Berlin at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries in many respects. His work in the Prussian capital can be traced back to 1779, when he held a teaching post at the Catholic school. Before that, after attending the Jesuit school in Breslau, he had studied theology, but it is not possible to determine when he fully devoted himself to music, nor is anything known about his musical training. After working as organist at Sankt Hedwigskirche from 1784, G.1790 as a double bass player in the royal chapel. In addition to his extensive compositional work (operas, ballets, incidental music, cantatas, songs, piano music) and his work as a theory teacher, he conducted the interact music at the royal plays, whereupon he, after the reorganization of Berlin's musical life in 1811, became music director and in 1816 royal conductor was appointed. He also worked as conductor of the music choirs of the Garde du Corps. G.s dignified compositions corresponded to the elevated entertainment needs of the music-educated Berlin bourgeoisie. His performance as a conductor was obviously not outstanding, but his diligence in rehearsing and his tireless zeal for work (CM von Weber) made him the ideal director of studies at the royal plays.
