James cites such bands as Black Angels and Brian Jonestown Massacre as examples of modern psychedelic bands that followed in the wake of icons such as Roky Erikson and his 13th Floor Elevators. Absolutes, though, take a less retro approach. Their sound is heavier, thicker and more distortion-laden than some of the more pop-oriented psychedelic bands that reached the Top 40 in the 1960s.
