Johnny Gill Jr. (born May 22, 1966) is an American singer and songwriter. He is a member of the R&B/pop group New Edition and was part of the supergroup LSG with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. Gill has released eight solo albums, three albums with New Edition, two albums with LSG, and one collaborative album with Stacy Lattisaw. He has sold over 15 million copies worldwide as a solo artist. Gill was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Johnny Gill Sr., a Baptist minister, and Annie Mae Gill. He began singing at the age of five in a family gospel group called Little Johnny and "Wings of Faith", which included his brothers Bobby, Jeff, and Randy Gill. He attended Kimball Elementary, Sousa Junior High, and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, completing his high school education with the help of a tutor. He initially planned to study electrical engineering in college but chose to focus on his music career. Gill's recording career began in 1982 when Stacy Lattisaw encouraged him to record a demo, which led to his debut self-titled album released on Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records. He later recorded the duet album "Perfect Combination" with Lattisaw, followed by his second solo album "Chemistry" in 1985. In 1987, Gill joined New Edition after Bobby Brown was voted out. He became one of the lead singers on the album "Heart Break", contributing to songs such as "Can You Stand the Rain", "N.E. Heartbreak", "If It Isn't Love", and "Boys to Men".
