Artist
John William Fail (b. 1980) is an artist and organiser from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Since 2009, he has co-facilitated Ptarmigan, a non-commercial project space/platform, in Helsinki, Finland and now with a second location in Tallinn, Estonia. Recently, he has focused on collaborative interactions, exploring interdisciplinary creative approaches through formats such as workshops, seminars and other participatory forms of cultural events, using Ptarmigan as a platform when possible. His background is in experimental music and sound, and he has released recordings under his own name and in several group projects, working in an intersection of improvisation, modern concrète and sound art, most recently in Lied Music, in collaboration with Vernon and Burns. He has worked professionally in the area of digital preservation and written academically on film theory and avant-garde literature. Some of his first records appeared in 2006.
