Artist
John Metcalf (b. 1946) is a Welsh composer. Metcalf was born in Swansea, South Wales, and now holds joint British and Canadian citizenship. He began his composing career in the 1960s, and has worked extensively in the field of music and theatre, including six operas. His compositions also include orchestral and chamber works. Stylistically his work has a strong tonal influence, but is often rhythmically complex, with much use of polyrhythms. Alongside his composing work, he was Artistic Director of the Banff Centre, Canada, for ten years, and is presently Artistic Director of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival and the Swansea Festival, both in Wales. He also teaches at the annual MusicFest Aberystwyth. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
