Johann Michael Steinbacher was an Austrian organist and composer whose documented life remains sparse and whose chronology is bounded chiefly by inferences and a handful of institutional notices rather than by a continuous biographical record. The Österreichisches Musiklexikon does not give a fixed birth date or place, but it suggests a birth before 1710, reasoning from the death of a son in 1727, and it records Steinbacher as organist of the Graz city parish church from 1740. After this point, the lexicon states that later news is lacking; it therefore leaves his death only as after 1741, adding that he could have died before 1750 while still in the Graz post. What survives of his music, however, is unusually specific for so shadowy a figure: the same lexicon notes that all extant works—among them five harpsichord concertos—with high probability derive from the collection of Joseph Bernhard Graf Attems, which raises (as a hypothesis rather than a confirmed fact) the possibility that Steinbacher belonged, at least in later years, to Attems’s household or musical circle.
