Artist
Johann Martin Spieß (1691–1772) was a German-born composer, church musician, and teacher whose career was closely tied to Reformed church music in the German-speaking world. Born in Hanau and later active in places including Heidelberg and Bern, he is documented in Bern through substantial mid-18th-century prints designed for worship and devotion. His surviving printed output includes a 1753 Bern volume of festival, penitential, and communion songs prepared in a two-part, continuo-oriented format for the Bernese church, the sacred song collection XXIV geistliche Arien zu zwey und drey Singstimmen (printed in Bern from 1761), and the devotional Musicalische Bibel-Andachten (1762). Modern organists and early-music discographies also continue to programme and record his music, reflecting an ongoing performance afterlife beyond specialist archives.
