Johann Jacob Weiss (c. 1662 – 1754) was a highly regarded lutenist and composer active in late Baroque Germany. He was active musically in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) from at least the mid-1680s (~1686). Around 1708 he was appointed court lutenist at the Palatine Chapel in Düsseldorf, a prominent musical establishment at the Elector’s court. Later he followed this court’s musical establishment during its moves to Heidelberg (1718) and then to Mannheim (1720), where he continued his work until his death on 30 January 1754. Weiss was part of a notable musical family — his children, including Silvius Leopold Weiss, became major figures in the Baroque lute tradition, and Johann Jacob himself was described by contemporaries as a profound musician and player of lute and theorbo, educating his sons and daughters in the instrument. His influence is especially clear in the development of the lute repertory in Germany during the early 18th century.
