about

Johann Georg Zechner born April 9, 1716 in Gleisdorf, Styria; died June 7, 1778 in Stein an der Donau , Lower Austria) was an Austrian organist and composer . Zechner left his homeland early on to go to Lower Austria, which was musically important at the time. Here, mainly in Vienna , he received his first musical training. In 1736 Zechner came to Göttweig , where he worked as an organist until 1743. He then became organist in Krems and from 1746 to 1753 he was Regens chori at the parish church there. At the same time, Zechner was studying theology and philosophy and, after being ordained a priest , received a beneficeship at the All Saints' Church in Stein. This position gave him such financial security that in the years that followed he only had to devote himself to composition. Spiritual dramas were written for the Jesuit high school in Krems, festival and anniversary music for the Göttweig monastery and table music for Melk . But his most important work was probably the Great Organ Mass in C (1761). This mass was performed, among other things, at the rededication service of the Amalien organ on December 12, 2010 in Berlin. The large organ by Johann Hencke in the Maria Taferl pilgrimage church was also created through his mediation .
