Artist
Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797) was born in Rappoltsweiler in Alsace. Very little is known about Wendling’s early years growing up in a region influenced both by German and French traditions and language, but we do know that this area of 18th century Europe enjoyed a rich relationship with the transverse flute dating back to medieval times. In fact, Wendling’s natal town of Rappoltsweiler, now Ribeauvillé in France, was once called Pfeiferstadt (Fifer Town). Wendling came from a musical family, his father and grandfather, both named Jean Charles Wendling, were musicians of import in their own right. We have even less information regarding how Wendling became one of the most renowned flute virtuosos of his day as nothing is known about his formation as a musician. However, in the mid-1740’s Wendling was employed in the court of Christian IV of Zweibrücken and served as his flute instructor. His relationship with Christian IV afforded Wendling the opportunity to travel through-out Europe, including trips to Berlin where he performed for Frederick the Great, Paris and Mannheim, where he was later principal flautist of the Mannheim court orchestra. Wendling also enjoyed a working relationship with J. C. Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, helping the latter during his stays in Mannheim and Paris. Wendling is an important figure in the development of the flute in the 18th century, not only as a preeminent practitioner of the instrument, but also as a teacher and composer. Wendl
