Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen (2 December 1670 in Bad Gandersheim — 12 February 1739 in Halle) was a theologian of the pietist Halle School and a scholar and follower of August Hermann Francke.[1] He was the second director of the Franckenschen Stiftungen, a collection of schools for orphans. Freylinghausen was born on 2 December 1670. He studied theology in Jena and in 1695 was his assistant in ministry at St. Ulrich's Church in Halle. At his death in 1739, he was priest of St. Ulrich and director of the orphanages and boarding schools. Freylinghausen's significance lies with his administrative accomplishment for all of the districts of hymnology. He himself wrote 44 spiritual Lieder and organized more greater collections of Lieder. His Geistreiches Gesangsbuch (Spiritual Songbook) with 1500 old and new spiritual Lieder was known as "Freylinghausen's Songbook" abroad. He died on 12 February 1739 in Halle. # On Freylinghausen's Significance Freylinghausen warrants attention as a pivotal figure in Protestant educational reform and the Pietist movement's practical application. Beyond theological writing, he demonstrated how religious conviction could translate into sustained institutional change—inheriting and expanding Francke's orphanage network into a comprehensive educational system that addressed genuine social need. His administrative legacy reveals how 17th-century reform movements operated not merely as intellectual exercises but as attempts to reshape society through schooling and care. Studying his work illuminates the often-overlooked connection between spiritual revival and social infrastructure, showing how Pietism's emphasis on lived faith generated educational innovation that influenced Protestant thought across generations.
