Joseph Satriani (born July 15, 1956) is an American rock guitarist, composer, record producer, and songwriter. He began his career as a guitar instructor, teaching students who later achieved prominence, including Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and Alex Skolnick. From the mid-1980s onward, he established a successful solo career as an instrumental rock artist. He has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and has sold over ten million albums worldwide. In 1988, he was recruited by Mick Jagger as lead guitarist for the singer’s first solo tour. In 1993, he toured with Deep Purple as a temporary replacement for Ritchie Blackmore. Satriani was born in Westbury, New York, to an Italian-American family. He became interested in playing guitar at the age of 14 after learning of the death of Jimi Hendrix. He studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and pianist Lennie Tristano, whose technical approach influenced his playing. He later taught guitar while pursuing formal music studies, eventually relocating to Berkeley, California, where he continued teaching students who would go on to join bands such as Metallica, Primus, Testament, and Exodus. In the late 1970s, he formed the band Squares. He later joined the Greg Kihn Band, which helped him finance the recording of his debut solo album "Not of This Earth", released in 19
