Artist
João Martins was born in 1977 and studied saxophone in his teenage years. At a mid-point of his formal musical studies he started experimenting with non-classical music: some jazz, rock and popular music, and some contemporary and avant-garde academic stuff. He started playing freely improvised music in 1998 in a project called Ohmalone. Since then, he has played in many ensembles and also in solo performances, using saxophones, some live electronics and instruments that he builds himself, studying the work of several instrument builders. He's also a sort of a composer, mainly doing music for theatre, film and other media. It's not strict composition, because there's a lot of improvisation and experimentation going on all the time, but it requires some structural work and some compositional techniques. Some related projects: F.R.I.C.S., Lost Gorbachevs, Red Albinos, Klank Ensemble, amog others. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
