Artist
Jiří Ropek (July 1, 1922 in Prague – June 27, 2005) was a Czech composer, organist and music teacher. Ropek was a student of Bedřich Antonín Wiedermann at the Conservatory, Charles University and the Music Academy in Prague. From 1950 he was organist at St. Jakob's Church. Until his retirement he was a professor of organ at the Prague Conservatory. From 1950 he appeared as a concert organist, e.g. in Russia, Germany, Holland, England and Israel. In 1994 he became an honorary member of the English Royal College of Organists. As a composer, Ropek has performed e.g. with organ and choral works, some of which have appeared in England, e.g. Variations on Victimae Paschal Laudes, Toccata and Fugue for Organ and Introduction and Fugue for Trumpet and Organ. He also composed sonatas for solo instruments such as flute, trumpet, oboe, violin and organ, as well as works of sacred music. In 1995 the Czech label Multisonic released the CD Jiři Ropek, Composer and Organist, on the John Scott, Jan Kalfus, Pavel Černý, James Kibbie and the composer himself will play works by Ropek.
