British composer, born 1934. Received early encouragement from Ralph Vaughan Williams. Studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and taught composition at the Royal College of Music for thirty years. Has specialised largely in chamber works, often for unusual combinations of instruments, showing great economy of expression.
