about

Jean-Jacques-Baptiste Anet—frequently encountered in French sources and on surviving prints simply as “Baptiste”—was baptized in Paris (parish of Saint-Eustache) on 2 January 1676 and died at Lunéville on 14 August 1755. He was a violinist and composer whose career is traceable not only through later narrative summaries but, crucially, through a small set of surviving printed music books that fix his identity as a publishing composer. An authority notice in the BnF catalogue explicitly warns against confusing him with his father, Jean-Baptiste Anet (1650–1710), and situates the son as a professional musician connected to royal and court service: a member of the royal chapel from 1712, and later a musician at Lunéville in the circle of the ex-king of Poland, Stanislas Leszczyński (from 1737). Baptiste Anet” and places him within the Franco-Italian continuo-sonata world then flourishing in Paris; the title page and the engraved publication details give you a hard bibliographic point of reference for attribution and dating. A second, stylistically adjacent but repertorially distinct publication, the Deuxième oeuvre de Mr Baptiste (Paris, 1726), consists of suites of pieces “à deux musettes” that are explicitly said to suit multiple instruments (including flute, oboe, violins, and also th
