Jean de Maletty was a French composer active during the last third of the 16th century in the South of France. The title pages of his editions are clear: he was born in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (Var), on a date still unknown. His two volumes of music on the Amours de Ronsard appeared in Paris in 1578 with Adrian Le Roy and Robert Ballard, dedicated to relatives and not to noble protectors as is often the case. The poem that begins the first volume suggests that he went to work (or learn?) in Italy: Therefore, I don't say, from a comparison, That on the return from Italy to Provence you drag All the best chords, and musitienes laws That an Italian poor has in his house. The same year, he won the second prize for the five-voice song at the Puy de musique d'Évreux (awarded with a silver lute) with his song Veu la douleur, not published in his collections. The price register does not mention any position with a nobleman or in a church1. The only information we then have is a rental contract that he signs toLyon in January 1583, he was said to be " musician living in Lyon"; it is the only location we have in his entire career. Finally, in 1597 (is he already dead?), seven psalms in French were published in Geneva in a collection made up by Simon Goulart. This is their only known source. From all this we can assume that he was an independent musician. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
