Artist
Jean Daniel Braun (born around 1703 ; died on February 24, 1738 in Paris) was a French flautist and composer. The dates of life and vita of Jean Daniel Braun are only known in part. An Alsatian origin is suspected [1] . In the first half of the 18th century he was a member of the ducal chapel in Épernon , the duke at the time was Louis Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin (1707–1743). Since some of his works also include the bassoon as an alternative to the flute , Braun probably played both instruments. Between 1728 and 1740 several of his works were printed in Paris, including 4 books with sonatas for flute and basso continuo (opp. 1, 5, 7 and one without an opus number). Also preserved are sonates en trio for flutes, violins or oboes and continuo (op. 3), sonatas for two flutes without bass (op. 4) and 6 sonatas for 2 bassoons (op. 6). The authorship of a flute concerto in D major ascribed to Braun is uncertain, as is that of the 8 Caprices for flute without bass (which strongly reminds of similar works by Johann Joachim Quantz - who met him during a stay in Paris in 1726/27) . Jean Daniel Braun's younger brother with the same first name, called "Braun le Cadet", published several works by him posthumously in 1740.
