Artist
Jazz Mandolin/favorites is like 50s West Coast cool jazz, played like Art Pepper, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker and Stan Getz, with some bossa nova sounds, but instead of saxophone or trumpet, the mandolin plays the heads and all the solos. And plays them beautifully too. Dan Mareen has a special talent for playing lyrical jazz solos on mandolin over west cool and bossa nova standards. Dan is a classicially trained musician with multiple degrees. He grew up in San Diego but has lived in a small village outside Zurich Switzerland for more than 20 years. He plays piano, guitar, mandolin and saxophone, and he teaches music at local colleges. His influences are jazz, avant guarde, Frank Zappa and classical. On this cd, he pours his heart out over 50s standards. Supported by Derek Cooper on rhythm guitar, this duo's sound takes you to the cafes of Paris on a warm summer evening. Derek Cooper is a mutli instrumentalist based in the SF Bay area and has released multiple cds, ranging from blues, jazz, rock to soul and R&B. For true jazz fans into serious listening, or as engaging background music for cocktail/dinner parties or romantic dinners for two, Jazz Mandolin is intimate, warm, genuine and catchy. After a few spins, the melodies keep playing in your head and you'll even catch yourself whistling the solos.
