about

Jan-Jacob van Turnhout, also Jean Jacques de Turnhout or Jacobs, born around 1545 and died after 1618, is a Franco-Flemish composer. Jan-Jacob would be Gerardus van Turnhout's younger brother. The surname, "Jacques", gave rise to the formation of alternative Christian first names: Jean-Jacques or Jan-Jacob. On August 9, 1577, "Jean" was first mentioned as the new master of the chapel of Saint-Rombaut Cathedral in Mechelen. At that time, he was designated as a native of Brussels. Around 1580, during the religious unrest, he lost his position. Around 1586, he obtained a similar position, which he held until his death, with Alexander Farnese, governor of the Netherlands, in Brussels. In 1594, he was paid 50 pounds for a mass in honor of the solemn entrance of Archduke Ernest of Austria to Antwerp. In 1594 and 1596, for the education of six choir children for which he was responsible, he asked for additional funds, which were granted to him. During the funeral ceremonies for Archduchess Margaret of Austria in 1611, he and Gery of Ghersem shared the tasks of master of chapel. His name last appeared in the register of the chapel in 1618. Jan-Jacob published the collections Il primo libro de madrigali (The First Book of Madrigals) and Sacrarum cantionum (Sacred songs). Two madrigals and a song on lyrics in Dutch were inserted into other sources. The song Gij meijskens die vander comenscap sijt (You girls who are waiting) was published in 1572 by the publishers Phalesius and Beller
