In the year of 1999 in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin this DJ/Producers journey was about to begin. Falling in love with the soundtrack to the Matrix; James Benton spent all of his hard earned money on electronic music, and DJ mix cd’s. Finding a true passion with the style of music James Benton began listening to KUMD; a college radio station that had great DJ’s on in the middle of the night. Those DJ’s helped to shape James Benton’s style, and also many hours of lost sleep. Moving up in the Duluth electronic music scene James Benton joined a small independent record label called Xero Music. Under the name DJ Self, James Benton held a weekly free DJ night at Roundabout records in Duluth which hosted many DJ’s from across the region including Jevne, Jack Trash, and Dustin Zahn. James Benton had much success early in his career opening up for DJ Micro (for those of you that know the story he would have chosen to open for DJ Rap) during a plush event at the Quest nightclub. James Benton can be heard across the city playing styles ranging from Deep House, Tech House, Minimal, and Electro House.
