Artist
Jakob Friedrich Greiss (also found under the variant surname Kreuss) was an 18th-century German organist and composer associated with the musical life of Hesse-Darmstadt. He trained with Christoph Graupner, the long-serving Kapellmeister in Darmstadt, and is documented as court organist (Hoforganist) to the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1751 to 1769. Greiss is best known today through a small body of organ chorale settings preserved in later transmission and modern editorial collections. Titles securely linked with his name include chorale treatments such as Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt, Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten, and Nun danket alle Gott, alongside further Lutheran chorale-based pieces. Modern recordings occasionally include individual Greiss chorales within wider organ anthologies, offering a glimpse of his repertory in performance.
