Artist
Jacques Cordier dit Bocan (c. 1580. - 1653.) was a French choreographer, dancer and omposr who contributed to Jacobean and Caroline masque. He was a celebrity in Europe, undoubtedly the most brilliant violinist of his age, who wrote numerous ballet scores, and one of his dances, "La Bocanne", was hugely popular. His nickname refers to an area in Picardy promised to him by the Duke of Montpensier. Marin Mersenne's Harmonie Universelle (1636) reproduced a tune attributed to him La Bocanne. The French king's Violins were called 'Les disciples de Bocan', the artist himself 'Le Baptiste d'alors' - Lully of his day. He frequently insulted professional rivals. The Queen of France, Denmark, Poland, and England sought his expertise; he could afford to charge astronomical fees. Bocan traveled much, pursuing a dual career in both London and Paris, where his family lived. At the English court, Bocan enjoyed a long career as choreographer and violinist. In spring 1615 Ann Dudley a Maid of honour to Princess Elizabeth was getting married; for the festivities Bocan composed a ballet.
