Jacob Herman Frederik Fischer (born Utrecht, The Netherlands, 18 april 1938) is a Dutch-language singer and songwriter, who - as Jaap Fischer - enjoyed huge success as a folk and protest singer, known for his witty, provocative songs in the Dutch language. Hugely popular amongst university students, Fischer decided to 'go underground' in 1964: he stopped performing and there were rumors that he had committed suicide or gone mad. Classic Jaap Fischer songs include 'Het ei' ('The Egg'), 'De monniken' ('The Monks'), 'Om je geld' ('For Your Money') and 'Jan Soldaat' ('Soldier John'). He resurfaced in 1976 as Joop Visser and started performing again, which he still does up to this day. He self-released a string of albums as Joop Visser, turning down almost every interview request. Visser almost never appeared on television. For unknown reasons he refuses to speak about his years as Jaap Fischer and has referred to the 1960s as "a period I do not wish to be reminded of".
