Ivo Gamulin Gianni was born on 16 February 1971 in Jelsa on the Island of Hvar. As the youngest of 5 brothers he was welcomed as a prince into his big family, especially by his father Gianni, whose name he is using as his artistic name. He spent his childhood in the warm community of his parents, father, a fisherman and mother Margarita, a devoted housewife who expressed her creative potential by writing poetry and publishing a book of poems in čakavština dialect. As a 5-year-old child, at Christmas Eve, Gianni first took a microphone in his hands and sang in the local church that was the centre of life in Jelsa and also the first concert stage Gianni had ever stepped on. The specificity of this concert was that, on this occasion, he sang a song his mother wrote lyrics and music for. A shy, modest child who didn’t like being exposed, such as Gianni, sang his first solo then, without seeing this, not even in his wildest imagination, as his future profession. Living in a small town without music school complicated his interest for music, especially for playing organs and harmonium, which he was taught by sisters of the local church. He grew up with church music and folk chants that he had been a part of as acolyte in the church, as a part of intimate milieu of Jelsa and its inhabitants.
