Composer, conductor, pianist and pedagogue, born 25 February 1807 in Romanov in Volhynia, died 9 October 1867 in Warsaw. Dobrzyński first attended the Jesuit College in Romanov and then, in 1817-21, the Podolian Gymnasium in Winnitsa. He learnt music from his father, Ignacy, the violinist, composer and conductor, and from 1825 from Józef Elsner in Warsaw, first privately and in 1826-8 as a student of the Main School of Music. Having started to compose in Winnitsa, Dobrzyński spent the rest of his live in Warsaw, where he composed, taught, organized music groups and sought backing for symphony concerts with himself as the conductor. His piano teaching skills were widely recognized and Sennewald published his Szkoła na fortepian / School for the Piano (Warsaw 1845). In 1835 his Symphony no. 2 in C-minor op. 15 earned him the second prize at the Vienna composing competition. It was performed in Warsaw (certain movements only) and in Leipzig with Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy conducting; Sennewald published it in Warsaw in 1862 (the two-piano version) as Symfonia charakterystyczna w duchu muzyki polskiej / Symphony in the Characteristic Spirit of Polish Music. In 1836-8 Dobrzyński composed his first opera, MONBAR CZYLI FLIBUSTIEROWIE / Monbar or the Filibusters [aka "Freebooters"] op. 30. Its parts were played in concerts in Warsaw, Poznań, Berlin and Dresden, and its stage premiere took place in The Warsaw Teatr Wielki in 1863. In 1841-3 he taught music at the Alexandrian Instit
