Iceburn, later known as The Iceburn Collective is a musical group formed in 1991 in Salt Lake City, Utah, US, by guitarist/vocalist/composer Gentry Densley, the sole constant member through multiple personnel changes. They were known for their eclectic style combining elements of jazz, heavy metal, punk, classical music and greek mythology. Iceburn achieved little mainstream attention, but earned critical praise for their unusual music. Starting out as a 5 piece in 1990, Iceburn formed from the ashes of hardcore bands Insight and Brainstorm. The style of those two bands carried over into their first 7" released in 1991. The original lineup consisted of Jeremy Chatalain - Vocals, Gentry Densley - Guitar, Doug Wright - Bass, James Holder - Guitar, and Joseph “Chubba” Smith - Drums. Soon after, they became a 3 piece with Gentry on vocals and guitar, Chubba on drums and Cache Tolman joining on bass. Their sound at that time could be classified as jazzcore, blending the speed and energy of hardcore punk and metal with the intricacy of jazz. It was in this style that they produced the albums “Firon,” released on Victory records, and it’s follow-up, “Hephaestus” on Revelation Records. In 1996 for the release of “Meditavolutions,” the band had expanded with a saxophonist, percussionist and second guitasist. As the lineup of the band became more fluid, they started going under the name The Iceburn Collective, which better reflected the ever-shifting membership. The band gradually
