Artist
Ian Gammie enjoys a wide ranging career in music, as a performer on viola da gamba and also as a guitarist, teacher and publisher. He has toured throughout Europe and North America, and over the last 35 years recorded with the Early Music Consort directed by David Munrow, the Deller Consort under the direction of Alfred Deller, I Solisti Veneti with Claudio Scimone, The Consort of Musicke, The English Consort of Viols, The Parley of Instruments, Opera Restor’d, the Cambridge Baroque Camerata and Café Mozart. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 both as performer and as guest on topical discussion programmes. His most recent recordings have been a fourth disc of music associated with Jane Austen (with the soprano Sophie Bevan), a disc of music by Haydn and his English patron the Earl of Abingdon (with the tenor Rogers Covey-Crump) and a recording of songs by Haydn with the soprano Dame Emma Kirkby. He is director of Corda Music Publications which specialises in publishing string works of the 16th-18th century, as well as 20th-century music. He has published more than 100 works for guitar ensembles, a major contribution to broadening the use of the guitar in music education, and writes occasional articles for Classical Guitar magazine. For relaxation, he plays jazz guitar and researches the more obscure corners of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century history.
