Hugo Race is an Australian, Singer-songwriter, who started in the Aussie Punk band Plays With Marionettes, was a founding member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds (from 1984-1985, featuring as one of the two guitarists, along with Blixa Bargeld, on their debut album "From Her To Eternity" and the world tour to follow. In 1985, Race left the Bad Seeds and Berlin, returned to Melbourne and formed swamp/ swing band The Wreckery, whose 2008 retrospective, "Past Imperfect", makes much of their long out of print work available again. Returning to Germany in the 1990's, Race formed the international trio, Hugo Race + True Spirit, a prolific band which released some 15 CDs (many on Glitterhouse Records). While taking on a dark roots/ swamp vibe in their early albums, True Spirit, would go on to integrate, psychedelic electronica, world music hybrid with increasingly sophisticated arrangements and unclassifiable sound. Though Race spent some time living in the States, it is unknown at this writing if True Spirit ever played live in the US. The Last True Spirit album "53rd State" was released in 2008 and was acclaimed - like all their work - by nearly all critics who reviewed it. It seems Race married a Sicilian woman and before 2010 relocated to Sicily or Italy. He is currently doing several projects at once.
