Hovhannes I Mandakouni (Armenian: Հովհաննես Ա Մանդակունի ; died 490) was a Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church from 478 to 490. "Energetic prelate, great preacher", Hovhannès succeeded the catholicos Giout d'Arahez on the latter's death in 478. The contemporary Armenian historian Ghazar Parpetsi describes him as "learned, eloquent, austere, of an ardent zeal against Mazdaism ". Throughout his catholicosship, Hovhannès collaborated closely with Vahan Mamikonian , leader of the Armenians during the insurrection against the Persians then marzban of Armenia: he convinced him to lead the insurrection, accompanied him to the battle of Nersehapat in 482 and played an important role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Nevarsak. After the return of peace, and while Vahan devoted himself to the recovery of the country, Hovhannès worked from his seat in Dvin to restore religious discipline and rigor. A “respected theologian,” Hovhannes reorganized the missal of the Armenian Church; he left prayers, hymns and about thirty homilies centered on the themes of repentance, prayer and sin. Hovhannès died in 490 and was succeeded by Babgen d'Otmous User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
