Artist
Hossein Bakhtiari (b. 1988, d. April 2, 2024) was a young and devoted Iranian madāḥ (religious eulogist) renowned for his warm, plaintive recitations of Ahl al‑Bayt elegies. Born in the 1980s, he led mourning gatherings primarily at the Hosseiniyeh Seyyed al‑Shohada on Mofatteh Street and at the Bayt al‑Hussein in Karbala, striving to revive older styles of raw, unamplified — yet deeply intimate — lamentation. Unlike many contemporary madāḥīn who rely heavily on video propagation, Bakhtiari preferred the immediacy and spiritual immersion of live, unrecorded sessions, earning him a quiet but dedicated following among traditionalist circles. On Thursday, April 2, 2024 (10 Ramadan 1445), at the age of 36, Bakhtiari suffered a fatal heart attack during a mourning recital, sending shockwaves through Iran’s religious and cultural communities. His funeral procession on Saturday, April 4, was attended by leading eulogists such as Hossein Tāherī, Mohammad‑Hossein Hadadian and Reza Helāli, and he was laid to rest in the Shrine of Shaykh Abdol‑Azim in Rey. High‑profile condolences poured in from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and prominent seminary scholars, while devotees continue to commemorate him by replaying his recordings and publishing tribute videos under titles like “Pādshāh-e Khalq” (“King of Mankind”).
