Artist
Horse Eats Hat is a two-piece noise machine from Chicago, Illinois. Incorporating influences as disparate as cutesy twee pop and aggressive punk rock, HEH operate in the same DIY traditions as early hardcore and riot grrrl bands--not out of some privileged quasi-moral stance or as an aesthetic statement but for purely economic reasons. Deanna McMillan (baritone guitar/vocals) was raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a childhood steeped in country and gospel music. Actively discouraged from playing music by a predominantly male local scene, she discovered punk rock and free jazz as an adolescent and played in her bedroom until moving to Chicago in 2005. Becoming a recession casualty left her little to do but play guitar in between the phone interviews which led nowhere. Austin J. Hall (drums) hails from New Haven, Connecticut, where he was actively encouraged to play music by a predominantly male local scene. Making the transition from fake hippie to punk, he began playing with riot grrrl holdover bands in New Orleans in the mid 1990s, taking a brief detour to Nashville before settling in Chicago. By day he is an exceedingly cheerful reference librarian, belying his true nature as one of the loudest drummers in the universe.
