about

Honoré d’Ambruis (also encountered under the spellings d’Ambruys, Dambruys, and Dambruis) was a French Baroque composer of secular vocal music whose surviving historical profile is defined almost entirely by a small body of printed and performable airs de cour from the last quarter of the seventeenth century. His life dates are not securely documented, but modern reference summaries place his activity in roughly the period from about 1660 to about 1702 and treat him as a disciple of Michel Lambert. The most firmly anchored point in his output is a printed collection issued in Paris in 1685, Livre d’airs du sieur d’Ambruis avec les seconds couplets en diminution mesurez sur la basse continuë, which is repeatedly described in modern commentary as the only one of his named songbooks to survive to the present. That 1685 book is singled out not merely as repertory but as evidence for performance practice, because it presents written-out ornaments and elaborated second couplets in diminution, a feature that later writers cite as a window into how singers might have executed embellishment in this milieu. Other songbooks attributed to him are reported in reference accounts for later dates (notably 1696 and 1702), but these are described as not surviving in accessible modern transmission, leaving the 1685 print as the practical foundation for repertory, attribution, and stylistic understanding. Beyond that single surviving print, d’Ambruis also appears in modern scholarly-catalogui
