Hoang Nam lives in San Diego California. Like many artists in the Vietnamese entertainment industry, he came from a show business background. Hoang Nam must have show biz in his blood, since he is the grandson of the talented actor, Doan Chau Mau. His mom's older sister is actress Kim Tuoc and her younger sister, his other aunt, is the famous singer Thanh Tuyen. In the 60s and 70s, Thanh Tuyen became a household name when she collaborated with such teen idols as Duc Huy, Carol Kim, and Mai Le Huyen. His uncle is singer Manh Dinh. Hoang Nam began his singing career between 1985 and 1986, first by entertaining at various get-together at home where he discovered his affinity to music and later, by singing at various student productions. Hoang Nam slowly graduated to local entertainment in San Diego at city functions and at the universities. He sang at events like Tet festivals, April 30 ceremonies and meetings. Hoang Nam finally made his professional debut two years ago, signing a contract with Diem Xua Productions. Hoang Nam's forte has always been love songs. His live performances and his recorded music reflect this tendency. He usually sings the popular love songs of the day aiming at a younger audience. However, he also sings older love songs creating those melancholic feelings in the older set. Hoang Nam's singing talents spanned many type of songs, from Vietnamese to English to Chinese.
