Solomon "Sol" Ho'opi'i (no relation to slide guitarist Sol Ho'opi'i) and his brother Richard (Rick) became a vocal group through the singing and playing they did together at church and church gatherings, which lead to them performing as a group at hotels and taking part in a song contest. Sol and Rick formed their own group in 1968 called The Ho’onanea Serenaders, before deciding to name their duo after themselves. When the Brothers recorded their debut album for Poki Records in 1975, Sol was 40 years old. Even as the group gained attention across the Hawaiian islands, he kept his job as a sanitation worker, all while maintaining a home with nine children.
