Artist
Ito Hisao, born Shisan-o in 1910 in Motomiya-cho, came from a politically active family. Initially aspiring to be a pianist, he moved to Tokyo, enrolling at the Tokyo University of Agriculture to appease his family while secretly studying music. Ito debuted as a singer in 1932, adopting various stage names before settling on Ito Hisao. His baritone voice gained popularity with wartime songs during the 1930s and 1940s, making him a prominent figure in Japanese music. Post-WWII, he struggled with guilt over wartime songs but revived his career with several hits. In his later years, he contributed to the Japan Singers Association and mentored young artists. Ito appeared in NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen 11 times and received multiple awards, including the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the Order of the Rising Sun. He passed away in 1983 at age 72.
