Artist
HiM was born in the mid 1990s as the solo recording project of Doug Scharin, a talented drummer and multi-instrumentalist. Scharin named the project HiM in deference to His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian emperor and spiritual leader of Rastafarianism. Jamaican music and dub sounds influence the HiM sound to this day. Scharin has been a part of other musical groups including Rex, Codeine, June of '44, and Out In Worship. Over time, HiM has gained a reputation for being composed of an ever-changing lineup of talented musicians playing horns, bass, guitar, and drums - and devoted to creating and playing fusion. The low end of dub is the HiM signature and HiM's music has been described as jazz/rock, avant-rock, funk, anti-funk, electro-jazz, free-jazz, soundscapist, layered, skeletal hip-hop, afrobeat, and jazz-fusion. If forced to categorize, Scharin describes HiM's sound as fusion. "Fusion is the way in which you make your bread," explains Scharin, "how you combine the elements." Critics commenting on Scharin's unique ability to bring together and direct great musicians have determined that Scharin has "the alchemist's touch." from http://www.chicagoinnerview.com/archives/jul04_him.htm User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
