Herzbeat Hotel are the manifestation of Damien Yates and Anton van Ringe's preoccupations with the transfixing abilities of sound. These two former theology students continuously dig under the surface for forgotten shamanic rituals, historical synchronicities and psychic sinergies, lingering over the glow of shamans, alchemists, fakirs and silent movie stars, always keeping in mind (but not necessarily agreeing with) Bob Dylan's polemic outburst, "the problem with musicians these days is that they don't fear God anymore". Their music mostly uses so-called traditional instruments from various parts of the world, whose accumulated symbolic power is then transmuted through electronic manipulation; thematically, they see themselves as micro-organisms who digest their subject matter, reconfiguring it into new psychological combinations. In performance, they resort to the use of masks, not out of a desire for anonimity, but to establish a sense of utilitary self-effacement, and also to provide emblems for the realities a given action will tap into.
