Herman Cody is a member of the Navajo tribe born on the reservation in northeastern Arizona at a place called Grand Falls. His father was a native practitioner. Herman was born in a hogan, a mud and log dwelling with a dirt floor and no modern amenities. He grew up herding sheep like most Navajo children of his era. He did not know English prior to enrollment in school at five years old. In high school he played in a country-western band as a rhythm guitarist and vocalist. Herman is a high school graduate, Further educational endeavors include an Associate of Arts Degree in Recreation Leadership, Bachelors degree in Elementary Education, Masters degree in Bilingual/Multicultural Education and a Doctorate in Education Administration and Supervision. He is a military veteran of the Vietnam Era. He studied International/Global Education in Mexico and England, and does presentations on Navajo language and culture. Herman's favorite sports are rodeo and the martial arts. He participated on and off in bareback and bull riding through the years. At age 43 he earned the title of 1993 Dineland Senior Rodeo Association Bareback Champion. He holds the rank of Blue Belt in KoreanTae Kwon Do and Brown Belt in Japanese Shotokan. In 2006 he recorded his CD entitled, My Way. Honors include Who's Who Among America's Teachers twice, and the 1998 National Indian School Board Association Teacher of the Year. Dr. Cody is an educator at the elementary, college and university levels.
