With their dark and twisted riff patterns and bursts of sudden violence mirroring fear, despair and the most disturbed sides of the human psyche, Henry's Anger slowly clawed their way towards the top of the Australian heavy music scene through a combination of strong material, a powerful live presence and sheer hard work. Even while their national profile was still only developing, no less an esteemed publication as Kerrang! called them Australia's best metal band. Formed in 1994 by Yates and former Addictive and Psychrist entity Coffey, the early line up was completed by McAllister and Nowhere (real name Michael Monighan) with a musical path mapped out in a similar direction to the likes of Tool. The "Interfere" EP contained the track '(sic)' which became something of a favourite on Triple J's "Three Hours of Power" program. After this McAllister was replaced by Paddy Coffey and Nowhere was ejected shortly after for Jamie Thomas. The musical direction shifted somewhat while still remaining dark and disturbed but the songwriting also matured, resulting in the Blacklining EP receiving such plaudits from the UK metal Bible NME. Audiences became more and more used to the band's presence as they supported the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, the Deftones and Mr Bungle, as well as the band's own heavy touring schedule, but perhaps the major breakthrough came when it toured with Strapping Young Lad in early 1999, two months before the release of the stunning Personality Test album
