Hemlata was a playback singer in Bollywood in the 1970s and early 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for her classical rendition Tu jo mere sur main.. in Chitchor. She began her career by singing Chanda ko dhoondhne... in Jeene Ki Raah (1969) which was a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. From there on she sang for many films including Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Nadiya Ke Paar and Paheli. She mostly sang for musicians like Usha Khanna and Ravindra Jain. However she was unable to gain greater popularity in Bollywood and is till date remembered for her title song from Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se.
