Perhaps these three men are the champions of the "World's Longest Band Name" competition, or perhaps they've been reading too many record jackets from the glory days of prog rock. Either way, Heisai Yasokawa's Empty Orchestra from Massachusetts is a concept unto themselves. HYEO combines elements of blistering grindcore with hefty slabs of crust punk, noise, and 60's psych rock, crafting a cacophony of sometimes dark, sometimes harmonious tunes. Think Jimi Hendrix defending the BatCave from a swarm of angry zombies and you will begin to have an idea of their eccentric and often chaotic music. The band cites a wide array of influences such as Black Flag, Converge and the MC5 -- apparent in their intense live performances -- as well as envy from Japan, Minor Threat, Mind Eraser, Reversal of Man, Incantation, Cursed and David Bowie. HYEO takes their name from Heisai's famous post-Hiroshima work entitled "100 Poems": "Nothing is endless; And everywhere is the sound of an empty orchestra" This tiny Orchestra formed in 2007 with then ex-members of such notable Boston-area acts as The Taste of Silver, P.S., Move The Rabbit, and Ravage. Originally, bassist Howie Snow toted the idea of a slam-death metal act.
