Heartbreak U.S.A. was a short-lived American girl-group consisting of Karen Mankes (lead vocals), Susan Vuotila (backing vocals) and Rebecca Sullivan (lead vocals and an original member of the synth-pop trio The Flirts). While Sullivan expressed interest in songwriting and producing during her time in The Flirts, only after her departure from the group would the public get to see what she had been working on. Sullivan initially planned to create her own version of The Flirts, but this attempt was stopped by Flirts' creator Bobby Orlando. With preparations for the group’s debut already underway, the album’s title and group name were switched and disclaimers were added disputing any affiliation with Orlando’s Flirts. The group, now titled Heartbreak U.S.A., would release their first E.P. titled The Flirts alongside lead single “Impulse” in 1984 with Preppy Records. The E.P. was entirely produced by Sullivan and boasted songwriting credits from both Sullivan and Mankes.
