about

Harry Blech (born March 2, 1910 in London, † 9 May 1999) was a British violinist and conductor. Blech studied violin at Trinity College of Music with Sarah Fenwick, then at the Manchester College of Music with Arthur Catterall and finally in Prague with Otakar Ševčík. In 1929 and 1930 he was a member of the Halle Orchestra. In 1930 he joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult. Since the mid-1930s he also played in different formations, string quartet, later became Edward Silverman, Douglas Thompson and William Pleeth, with Max Salpeter, Keith Cummings and Douglas Cameron. At the same time he began his career as a conductor. In 1942 he founded the "London Wind Players". At the suggestion of pianist Dorothea Braus 1949, he founded the London Mozart Players. The orchestra gained international recognition with the interpretation of works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, but also contemporary composers. When Blech in 1984 retired, he had performed with the Mozart Players in about two hundred cities with about two hundred soloists. In 1962 and 1984 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
