Born one day before the Dionne quintuplets and only a few months after the Apollo Theater was opened to coloured patrons, Harlan Ellison is a writer who is perhaps equally known for his fiercely imaginative fiction, cultural criticism that is by turns withering and sentimental, and a colourful history of litigation. Over the course of his fifty-plus-year career, he has killed Joan Collins, inspired the creation of The Terminator, appeared on The Dating Game, hosted a radio series, been the answer to a clue on Jeopardy!, sung professionally, been blacklisted by the office of California governor Ronald Reagan, and controversially groped fellow writer Connie Willis on stage at a Hugo Awards ceremony.
