Artist
To anybody with the slightest interest in electronic music and krautrock Hans-Joachim Roedelius needs no introduction. As founding member of Kluster (with Conrad Schnitzler and Dieter Moebius; continued as Cluster after Schnitzler's departure) and Harmonia (with Moebius and Michael Rother), he is one of the most highly-regarded pioneers and key figures in both genres. Roedelius remains very productive as of 2015, now in his 80s, and not only performs regularly but also continues to release an impressive amount of work. Ubi Bene sees him join forces with Leon Muraglia, electronic artist and guitar player of a younger generation, who, in addition to his solo recordings, also works as DJ and studio musician. The album's 12 tracks add up to an elegant musical trip that meanders between moody, ambient piano work; experimental passages; and contemporary electronica -- a fascinating chapter in Roedelius's impressive oeuvre. This collaboration merits attention as a late-career dialogue between electronic music's founding generation and contemporary practitioners. Roedelius, now in his eighties, approaches these sessions with the same exploratory rigor that defined Cluster's innovations, while Muraglia brings fresh interpretive sensibility to shared sonic territory. Rather than nostalgia or retrospection, the album demonstrates how foundational ideas in timbre and texture remain generative—capable of yielding new insights when engaged seriously by artists working decades apart. Their exchange reveals electronic music not as historical artifact but as living practice, still capable of yielding genuine discoveries through thoughtful collaboration.
