Gustavo López was born in Mexico City, and his formal guitar studies began at the young age of 9. Although he first appeared in public on the radio at age 11- he said he didn't take the guitar seriously until he was almost 25. He became a student of Daniel Garate,and later became the lead guitar player with the Mexican trio Hermanos Martinez Gil. After two years, he left the group and started giving concerts in all the country, including in the famous "Bellas Artes" where he had the opportunity to perform also the Boccherini guitar quintet in Re major "Fandango" with the Budapest string Quartet. In 1941, Gustavo married Emma Blackmore and became a father to 8 children. His youngest Jorge Lopez- Mexico City, 1955] would follow in his footsteps to become a professional guitarist. In the same period he started recording some records, for Cook, RCA, VIctor, Orfeon ,DImsa and other labels. In 1954- Gustavo participated in the Soundtrack of Veracruz - the film starring Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. The encounter with Segovia In the middle '50 he met Andrés Segovia and had the opportunity to play for him . Segovia suggested that Gustavo could travel to Italy to attend the master classes that Segovia was holding at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and provided a scholarship for him to be able to afford the travel and the living in Italy. In Siena Gustavo was among the best players in the group of the students of Segovia, with John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Jesus Silva etc. After Siena
